Canada on Monday offered its condolences and support to Beijing following the deadly quake that claimed some 9,000 lives across southwestern China.
"We are greatly saddened by the news that thousands lost their lives and that hundreds of children who were at school at the time are trapped in the debris, said Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier.
International Cooperation Minister Beverley Oda said Ottawa was prepared to lend assistance.
"Our thoughts are with the victims of this terrible tragedy and their families," she said.
"Canada stands ready to help should China request any assistance in its humanitarian relief efforts," said Oda.
