A Canadian man was arrested at the Vancouver airport after his arrival from India for allegedly smuggling in four kilograms of heroin concealed in his luggage, authorities said today.
The 38-year-old man, who was not identified by police, was referred to secondary examination following his arrest at the Vancouver International Airport last month, the Canada Border Services Agency said.
Agents discovered four kilograms of heroin hidden in two suitcases belonging to the man, who arrived in Vancouver on a flight from India on February 22.
They quizzed the man and sent his bags for secondary inspection at the Vancouver airport.
The narcotics were found in hidden compartments of his luggage, police said in a statement.
The man arrived at the airport amid heavy passenger traffic associated with the Vancouver Winter Olympic games.
The man faces numerous drug-related charges and has been released on a promise to return to court in June.
Police did not reveal why the announcement of his arrest was delayed for three weeks.
