A military exercise in China's Hunan Province, bordering India set off a panic among local residents with over 100,000 people fleeing their homes.

Panicky residents slept outdoors as a Chinese air force brigade conducted live-firing exercise near the city of Hengyang, official Xinhua news agency reported.

Exploding bombs rattled homes setting off rumours of an earthquake passed over by telephones and internet, leading to enmass exodus of the people from their homes.

"No quake was monitored by the municipal, provincial or national seismic networks in and near Hengyang City on Wednesday, "the city government said in a statement published on its website.
