At least six persons were injured after a knife-wielding man attacked commuters and passers-by at the busy Guangzhou railway station in south China on Tuesday morning, state media reports said.

The incident occurred at 11.30am at Guangzhou railway station square, the official news agency Xinhua quoted the police as saying. One suspect was shot at by the police and detained.

The lone detained suspect is receiving treatment at a local hospital and his identity has not been confirmed. Four persons, including three women, were rushed to the General Hospital of the Guangzhou Military Command where they were being treated.

The injuries were said not to be life-threatening, Xinhua said.

The Guangzhou Railway said that the incident did not impact the functioning of the station; trains were arriving and departing as per schedule.

A witness surnamed Chen told Xinhua that he saw three men wielding long knives and slashing at people. “Chen said two victims were injured on the back, one was hit on the arm and another one had a large amount of blood flowing from a cut on the neck,” the Xinhua report said.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Chinese police will help patrol tourist destinations in Paris this summer after a rise in muggings and attacks on Chinese tourists, a source in France’s interior ministry said Tuesday.
