China static on UNSC reform

world Updated: Feb 16, 2011 01:44 IST

China continues to refrain from openly endorsing India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Last week, the G4 — India, Brazil, Germany, Japan — issued a statement urging for a concrete outcome on UNSC expansion during the current General Assembly session. China reacted with a statement against speeding the process by ‘forcing premature plans’ and emphasised that ‘sharp differences over major issues’ remained.

On Tuesday, foreign ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu reaffirmed Beijing’s standard official position calling for a broad-based consensus. He did not comment on speculation that Beijing may vote in favour of India’s bid.
