The United States has named an official to promote substantive discussion between the Dalai Lama's representatives and the Chinese government and support initiatives to safeguard Tibet's unique culture.
As Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero will coordinate the US government's policies, programmes and projects on Tibetan issues within the context of US bilateral relationship with China, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced on Thursday.
In the previous administration, the under secretary for democracy and global affairs also concurrently served as the special coordinator for Tibetan issues.
