US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is in eastern Congo to demand an end to an epidemic of sexual violence that has engulfed the region amid continuing conflict. Clinton arrived in Goma on Tuesday from the Congolese capital of Kinshasa, where she had deplored the rampant use of rape and other sexual assaults as a weapon of war as "one of mankind's greatest atrocities" and urged the youth of the country to protest against it.

The UN has recorded at least 200,000 cases of sexual violence against women and girls in eastern Congo since conflict erupted in 1996. Although fighting has eased since 2003, the army and rebel groups are still attacking villages, killing civilians and committing atrocities.
