Clinton to make first visit abroad to Asia: Reports

world Updated: Feb 05, 2009 03:14 IST

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton plans to buck tradition and make her first visit as the top US diplomat to Asia, rather than Europe or the Middle East, media reports said.

Clinton plans to visit Japan, China, South Korea and possibly a country in South-East Asia, the reports released late Tuesday said. They cited diplomats who wished to remain unnamed because Clinton's travel plans in mid-February were still being finalised.

Clinton's first meetings with visiting diplomats, however, were with Europeans as she met Tuesday with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and British Foreign Secretary David Miliband in Washington.
