A Thai police officer was sentenced to six years in jail for forcing a woman from Myanmar to have sex with him in exchange for her freedom, media reports said on Wednesday.

The Bangkok South Criminal Court on Tuesday found Police Senior Sergeant Major Phairat Sribuaban guilty of demanding sex from a 27-year-old woman whom he had arrested in July 2009, for working illegally in the kingdom, the Bangkok Post reported.

Instead of handing the woman over for prosecution, Phairat allegedly offered to release her in exchange for sex.

The court found the police officer guilty of violating Section 149 of the Criminal Code, which prohibits civil servants from demanding bribes in exchange for not performing their duties.
