Crisis-hit Iceland gets new government

Iceland's first woman prime minister and first openly gay head of government announced a new cabinet that will immediately begin trying to dig the country out of its deep economic crisis.

Iceland's first woman prime minister and first openly gay head of government announced a new cabinet Sunday that will immediately begin trying to dig the country out of its deep economic crisis.

"I was today asked by the president of Iceland to finish forming the government, which has succeeded. That government will be based on new social values," said Social Democrat Johanna Sigurdardottir, who will serve as prime minister.

The new minority coalition between the Social Democrats and the Left Green party replaces outgoing Prime Minister Geir Haarde's right-left coalition that was forced to resign on January 26 following months of increasingly violent protests over the economic crisis.
