Dengue cases rises to 12,000 in Lanka

world Updated: Jun 29, 2009 17:20 IST

The number of people infected with dengue has risen to over 12,000 in Sri Lanka this year, with at least 152 deaths reported to the health authorities, officials said on Monday.

The government was battling to clean up the city and suburbs in a bid to rid mosquito breeding grounds and prevent the spread of dengue fever, officials said.

The government was also importing a predator bacteria to attack mosquito breeding grounds, officials said, adding that the first consignment of the BTI bacteria should arrive this week from Cuba.

Sri Lanka is a dengue-endemic country.
