"We are finding out that (Tony) Blair was much better than Brown," said Lord Megnad Desai, a Labour peer. He is among party critics who have fired salvos at PM Gordon Brown.

Desai’s criticism came on the heels of Chancellor Alistair Darling’s admission that Labour "needed to sharpen up". Asked why he felt Blair was better, Desai said: "He was more successful, won three record terms for Labour. He looked decisive...

"Blair could communicate with... people and explain his policies," Desai felt. "In contrast to Brown, Blair was a superb leader. Apart from Iraq which stung him, he never" took a a wrong step. Brown, Desai said, was a good thinker. "He analyses problems well and... was a great chancellor. But his problem is failure to be decisive and to be able to communicate."
