Amidst bIanket election coverage in the British media, news about Indian actor Salman Khan’s conviction on Wednesday in a drunk-driving case was prime time news on domestic television as well as in leading newspapers on Thursday.
Reflecting the globalisation of Bollywood and Khan’s large fan base in Britain, BBC News bulletins targeted at a domestic audience included some live coverage from Mumbai during the day on Wednesday and it remained one of the leading items in prime time news in the evening.
The Guardian devoted a full page to Khan’s conviction, with the headline, ‘Bollywood star faces long jail term, 12 years after fatal crash into homeless men’. The page included several photos and an estimate of 25 million pounds at stake on his forthcoming films.
The news was also covered prominently by The Daily Telegraph, The Independent and The Times.
Several of Khan’s films were shot in picturesque locales in Britain. His wax figure is one of those of Bollywoods stars that attracts many visitors in Madame Tussauds.
