A police raid on a building where children and teenagers were taught Islamic texts in the restive Xinjiang region in western China on Wednesday left 17 persons including 12 children injured after inmates set off explosives to thwart the raid.

According to state media, police rescued 54 children from what it called “an illegal Koran teaching centre” in Hotan in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region at the end of the raid. In all, 17 people were injured by suspects setting off explosives that caused a fire, Global Times said.

The Global Times newspaper on Thursday quoted Xinjiang government spokesman Hou Hanmin as saying the children were between 6 and 10 years old and had been barred from seeing their parents. Hou said upset parents reported the school to police.http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/6/08_06_12-metro15c.jpg

The report said the school was on the fifth floor of a residential building and that fire destroyed much of the floor.

According to agency reports, last month, courts in Kashgar in the region sentenced nine men to prison terms ranging between six to 15 years for their involvement with illegal religious schools or religious instruction.

In April, the government published photos of six alleged terrorists — all ethnic Muslim Uighurs from Xinjiang not in China currently — and said they were members of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement.

State news agency Xinhua said the East Turkestan Islamic Movement was “the most direct and real safety threat that China faces.” “They have participated in the organisation and planned and executed terrorist acts against Chinese targets.”
