A woman carrying a hammer was arrested after getting in to the hospital room of dying British reality television star Jade Goody, police and her spokesman said on Monday.

Goody, who has cancer and has been given only weeks to live, woke up to find the 41-year-old woman leaning over her with the tool at London's Royal Marsden Hospital, according to her spokesman Max Clifford.

The dying 27-year-old's husband Jack Tweed had briefly left her room to get a cup of tea when the incident occurred, he said.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said, "Police were called to the Royal Marsden Hospital on Sunday afternoon by security to reports of an unknown woman being in a patient's room."

"Officers attended and a 41-year-old woman was searched and found in possession of a hammer and was arrested for possession of an offensive weapon and taken into custody at a west London police station."

The woman was released on Sunday night and no further action would be taken, the spokeswoman told AFP. London's Evening Standard newspaper reported that the woman was believed to be French.

Goody, who found fame on 'Big Brother' in 2002, is trying to make as much money as she can in her remaining days to pay for the upkeep and education of her sons Bobby, five, and Freddy, four.

She married 21-year-old Tweed on February 22 after a nine-day engagement, for which media rights were sold. She was christened at the weekend along with her children, pictures of which will also be published.

On her first Big Brother appearance, the ex-dental nurse from south London shot to fame for her loud mouth and lack of general knowledge.

On Celebrity Big Brother in 2007, she sparked a major row in Britain and India over her treatment of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty after she was accused of racist bullying towards the Indian star.
