A strong 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit an area in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Argentina on Sunday, but there was no immediate word of casualties or damage, the US goverment reported.

The epicenter of the tremor, which struck at 1200 GMT, was located in the Drake Passage, 352 kilometers south-southeast of Ushuaia, Argentina, according to the US Geological Survey.

The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
