Eleven people were killed on Sunday in an avalanche which trapped a group of mountaineers in northeast Turkey, the NTV television station reported.

A group of 17 mountaineers from the Black Sea city of Trabzon were walking in the Zigana mountains about 50 km south of Trabzon when they were hit by an avalanche on Sunday morning.

Public Works Minister Faruk Ozak told reporters at the scene that 10 bodies had been recovered. One person later died in hospital.

Civilian and military rescue teams were joined by locals who managed to pull seven of the mountaineers out from under the snow.
