One-time Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted on Friday that he had an affair with a woman who made Web documentaries for his campaign but denied he had fathered her child.
“Two years ago I made a very serious mistake .... In 2006, I told Elizabeth about the mistake, asked her for her forgiveness, asked God for his forgiveness. And we have kept this within our family since that time,”he told ABC News television.
Edwards, 55, said his wife, who has incurable breast cancer, was “furious.”
“It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry,” said the former US senator from North Carolina and failed 2004 vice presidential candidate.
Late Friday evening, Elizabeth Edwards said she and her children would stand by him. The tabloid National Enquirer broke the story 10 months ago, but Edwards denied the report and the mainstream media would not touch it.
