An explosion of ammunition at a military base in southern Russia has killed six soldiers and wounded 12.
Emergency Ministry spokesman Oleg Ivanov said the blast occurred on Tuesday as the soldiers were disposing off old ammunitions on the Ashuluk base in the Astrakhan region. The cause was under investigation.
The explosion followed two major fires at ammunition depots elsewhere in Russia this summer. The fires caused extensive damage and numerous injuries.
No fire was reported after Tuesday's explosion.
