FBI official explains sting move against Ahmed

A senior FBI official says his agents spent months carrying out a subway bombing sting because they had to be sure the Pakistani-born man was serious about wanting to kill Americans.

A senior FBI official says his agents spent months carrying out a subway bombing sting because they had to be sure the Pakistani-born man was serious about wanting to kill Americans.

FBI Assistant Director John Perren says it became clear that Farooque Ahmed was committed to joining al-Qaida and carrying out attacks.

Perren said his agents are now investigating what made the naturalized US citizen turn against his adopted country. There are no signs he had ties to radical groups abroad or was trained there. Perren said Ahmed is the latest in a troubling trend of people who radicalize here in the US and try to carry out attacks without ever being formally directed by terrorist groups.
