A suicide attacker's explosive vest went off prematurely as he was trying to target a security forces convoy on the outskirts of this northwestern Pakistani city today, killing five civilians and injuring a dozen others.

Witnesses said the bomber fell down and the explosives detonated as he was trying to hit the convoy in a market in an area located along the boundary between Peshawar and the Khyber tribal region.

The blast, which occurred near a check post at Bara Qadeem, killed five civilians and injured a dozen others, police said.

A child was among the dead.

Officials said the death toll could rise as several of the injured were in a critical condition.

Security forces cordoned off the area as ambulances took the dead and injured to nearby hospitals.

The check post at Bara Qadeem is an entry point to the Bara area of Khyber Agency, which has been affected by militant violence in the past few weeks.
