At least five soldiers were killed when unidentified gunmen launched an attack on a patrol of around 30 security personnel in Peru, the army said in a statement.
The incident took place in Choquitaro town in Cusco region on Sunday, Xinhua reported.
The army said that three soldiers died at the spot, while two lost their lives at a hospital.
The military patrol was travelling to Choquitaro as part of security measures put in place for the second round of presidential elections held Sunday.
Incumbent President Alan Garcia condemned the attack, and termed the soldiers "martyrs".
