Four people have been killed and six injured in a gunfight between police and suspected drug dealers in a slum in Rio de Janeiro.

The police said around 30 members of an elite police unit - backed by armoured vehicles and a helicopter - raided a slum in the Pedreira neighbourhood to flash out drug traffickers on Thursday night.

Four drug dealers were killed in the shootout, the police said. Five police officers were injured when the criminals hurled a grenade at them. Another suspect was wounded in the gunfire.

The police said associates of the four dead suspects took away a rifle and four handguns that belonged to them.
