Unidentified gunmen shot dead at least nine indigenous people and wounded another 10 on a highway en route to a political rally in Mexico's southern Oaxaca state, state police said.

"So far we have nine people reported killed and another 10 injured," said a source at the state public safety office, who spoke privately.

The victims were "ambushed by unidentified assailants" as they headed from their town to the center of the town of Santiago Choapam, for a political rally ahead of local elections, the official said.

He did not speculate on a motive.
