Hina Rabbani says India is ‘warmongering’

Pakistani foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar on Tuesday said India was "blowing out of proportion" the recent incidents across the LoC, and indulging in "warmongering".

Seeking a moral high ground, she said Pakistan's response, in contrast, had been of a pacificatory nature.

Khar said at a New York think tank: "We see statements talking about proportionate response… statements that India has the capability to respond, we see warmongering."

Khar is here to mark the start of Pakistan's chairmanship of the UN Security Council -- for a month, according to a rotational arrangement.

But she has used the visit to highlight LoC tensions, which haven't received much attention here with the country focussed internally on a gun debate and debt crisis.

Khar had described General Singh's remarks "hostile" during an interview to US TV news network on Monday.

She argued that the Pakistani government was invested too deeply in the peace process to want an incident such as the LoC killing, and India should recognize that.

"There is absolutely no question of any one authorising any beheading or killing of Indian soldiers, because this would be opposite to the peace process."

Pakistan, she argued, also has two dead soldiers but "it is not upping the ante". "I represent a government that has taken political risk to reach out to the Indians and give them a clear message that we mean business when we want a different relationship with India."

Khar also drew a parallel with India, saying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had also faced "very big" allegations.

"The problem of corruption plagues many countries within South Asia and elsewhere also. You saw many many scandals of corruption and allegations on the Prime Minister within India also very recently and very very big ones," she said here.
