The theatrical trial of ousted Communist leader, Bo Xilai, ended on Monday with prosecutors pressing for a heavy sentencing for the former Party Politburo member and dismissing as “whimsical” his denials against the allegations of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power.
The trial ended post-lunch on Monday after five days of Bo putting up an apparently spirited defence against the allegations, calling his wife, Gu Kailai, “mad” and “insane” and his former police chief, “a liar” and fraud.
The verdict will be announced later, state-run Xinhua said.
The final day was not without its moments of quirk.
The court’s official microblog released an update that said Bo claimed to be wearing 50-year-old underwear while making an attempt to paint himself as a simple man on the face of revelations that the family owned a luxury villa in France and his son Bo Guagua flew to other continents for holidays.
“I am personally not interested in clothing. The long johns I am wearing now were bought for me by my mother in the 1960s,” Bo said, according to translated microblog transcript.
“I’m telling you all that the jacket I’m wearing, and the suits in my wardrobe, were all produced by a township enterprise in Xinjin county in Dalian.”
On Monday, while summing up the evidence against the fallen leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), prosecutors intensified their arguments against Bo. “The severeness of the accused’s crimes, and that he refused to admit guilt, don’t match the circumstances of leniency, and (he) must be severely punished in accordance with the law,” the court said.
Bo, according to the Reuters’ translation of the transcript, provided a new explanation for why former police chief Wang Lijun — who has accused Bo of punching him upon the news of Gu’s involvement in Heywood’s murder — fled to the US consulate in Chengdu in February, 2012. “He was secretly in love with Gu Kailai,” Bo said, adding that Gu had rejected the former police chief. “He muscled in on my home, on my feelings, which is the real reason for his defection,” the transcript said.
