The Indian government has denied accusations it is "dragging its feet" over establishing the identities of illegal immigrants in Britain who claim to be Indians and say they want to return.

Although the identification process is complex and lengthy, 86% of the cases referred by the British government have been resolved within two months, the home ministry was quoted saying by the Indian High Commission on Thursday.

The plight of many homeless and jobless Indian immigrants has been highlighted in the British media throughout this week.

Dependent on handouts from charities, many are said to live under bridges and in garages.
