A 45-year-old Indian woman has been arrested at the international airport here for possessing cocaine, police said on Friday.

“The person arrested with cocaine is an Indian national. She is 45-years-old,” police spokesman Ranjit Gunasekara told PTI in Colombo.

The woman arrived on board a flight from India last morning and was apprehended by the narcotic wing of the Sri Lankan police at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport here.

Senior DIG and Police Narcotic Bureau Chief Nimal Lewke said this was the first time that such a large stash of cocaine have been seized.

According to Lewke, around 480 gms of cocaine worth SLR 7 million was found in the possession of the woman who has been taken into police custody.

Noting that measures will be taken to inform the Indian officials about the incident, the officer said that the woman visited the island nation on two occasions earlier.

“This is the first time that such a large consignment has been seized. The most commonly used drug is heroin. Cocaine is very expensive. One gm of cocaine is worth around 15,000 SLR. We were able to detect the stash because of the skilled officers attached to the anti-narcotics unit,” Lewke said.
