India is looking at sending labour to Thailand for projects that Thai firms have taken up in other countries. “There is a shortage of labour…. We are looking at sending labour the way we send them to Gulf and are working for a pact in this regard,” said Anil Wadhwa, Indian ambassador to Thailand.
“The two prime ministers agreed to discuss a proposal for the establishment of a framework to enable regulated deployment of labour from India into the required sectors in Thailand,” said the joint statement issued after the meeting.
During the meeting between the PMs, the two sides agreed to enhance anti-piracy cooperation, promote security of sea lanes and Coast Guard cooperation aimed at ensuring safety and security of navigation in the Indian Ocean. “Both sides agreed to continue providing scholarships and training programmes for the sharing of expertise,” the statement said.
Manmohan Singh also presented a sapling of the original sacred Bodhi Tree from Bodhgaya as a gift for the ailing Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
