Indian naval ship to train Lankan sailors

Indian Naval ship 'Magar', used for amphibious and replenishment operations has arrived at Port of Trincomaleea to train Sri Lankan navy personnel in various skills of naval warfare.

Indian Naval ship 'Magar', used for amphibious and replenishment operations has arrived at Port of Trincomaleea to train Sri Lankan navy personnel in various skills of naval warfare.

The vessel and its crew were ceremonially received by the Sri Lanka Navy in accordance with naval traditions on Saturday.

Over 100 Sri Lanka Navy Officers under trainees and sailors embarked on board INS Magar for a practical training session on navigation, communication, seamanship, naval knowledge, damage control and fire fighting.

Later Captain Commander Simon Mathais paid a courtesy call on Eastern Naval Area Commander Rear Admiral Jayantha Colombage, the Defence Ministry statement said.

INS Magar, a landing ship tanker (LST) used for amphibious and replenishment operations has also the facility to board a Chetak helicopter.

The 125 metres long vessel claims for a displacement of 5,700 tons and accommodates a crew of 20 officers and 235 sailors on board.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Navy handed over an Indian Dhow sailing vessel along with two ( fishermen who had been arrested for illegal fishing in Sri Lankan territorial waters, to an Indian Coast Guard Vessel last week.

At the same time six Sri Lankan fishermen released by Indian authorities with their Multiday Trawler "Jayalaksha" were taken over by the Sri Lanka Navy and safely accompanied to Thammanna Pier, the Sri Lankan Navy said in a statement.
