Nations around the Indian Ocean Wednesday tested the first full-scale tsunami early warning system installed after the massive tsunami in December 2004 left nearly 300,000 people dead.

The test began at 8am local time and ended an hour later at 9 pm Wednesday, head of Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency Sri Woro Harijono told Xinhua by phone.

The test called "Indian Ocean Wave Exercise 2011" was aimed at ensuring that all equipment and facilities of the system function well, she said.

Indonesia, India and Australia have been chosen as the tsunami service providers in the region.
