If there were worries about India moving ahead of China in this particular field, the concerns were veiled under reactions that pointed out the lack of matching weaponry like missile systems on board the ship.

China’s sole aircraft carrier, Liaoning, build in former Soviet Russia, was launched in September last year.

Reactions ranged from grudging admiration at India capabilities to a not-so-subtle dismissal that the ship will have on situation in the Indian Ocean region.

“We should understand that every big country has a reason to have an aircraft carrier project. In Asia, China, Japan and India all have (aircraft carrier projects) It’s required not only for the military but also for the defence industry (to progress). It’s a rational requirement,” Ye Hailin, chief editor of South Asia Studies, a journal brought out by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences told HT.

Wang Xu from Peking University’s Centre for South Asian Studies said the launch of the carrier will not have much impact in India’s immediate neighbourhood.

At the end, Ye said it will matter how India uses the new carrier. “More than what weapon system you own, it is more important how you use them,” Ye added.
