Iran, on Tuesday, hanged four men in prison in the central city of Isfahan after they were convicted of drug trafficking, the ISNA news agency reported, quoting a statement from the judiciary.

The report said the men, whose appeals were turned down twice, were found guilty of possessing and carrying opium and other drugs.

The latest hangings bring the total number of executions in Iran to 88 so far this year, according to a count based on media reports.

Last year, at least 270 people were hanged. Iran says the death penalty is essential to maintain public security and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.
