Japan's parliament opened a session on Wednesday to install conservative Taro Aso as prime minister, officials said.

Aso is assured of winning the parliamentary vote as he overwhelmingly won a leadership election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to succeed Yasuo Fukuda, who resigned as prime minister on September 1 faced with slumping approval ratings.
