Japan's new prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama, said on Saturday he had called on his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao to make an international commitment on climate change.

Hatoyama added that Wen had said China would do its best to ensure that there was a successful outcome from U.N.-led talks on a new global framework to tackle climate change, due to be held in Copenhagen in December.

Hatoyama was speaking to reporters after a trilateral summit with leaders from China and South Korea, held in Beijing.
