Visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday called on Japan to play a bigger role in the UN peacekeeping operations, the official Kyodo news
During talks with Japanese Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada, Clinton said she wanted to "encourage" deeper engagement by Japan in such operations, said the report.
She also hoped that Japan could contribute in the anti-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia.
Earlier on Tuesday, Clinton and Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone held talks and agreed to strengthen bilateral ties to achieve various global issues.
The US secretary of state arrived on Monday on a three-day visit. She will also travel to Indonesia, South Korea and China as part of her four-nation Asia tour.
