If it does not find a home in the country of its origin, Nano, might find a more welcoming foreign address. The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka is readying a proposal to invite the Tata Group to set up the Nano factory in a special economic zone (SEZ) on the island nation.
The proposed location is the SEZ at Mirigama, about 60 km north of Colombo and 40 km from Bandaranaike International Airport.
“We have been reading newspapers... We have heard Ratan Tata wants to move out of Singur. We are telling Mr Tata he can come here and set up factory,’’ Dr Sarath Amunugama, Minister for Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion, told HT.
The minister said it would also be ensured that the factory had access to natural Lankan rubber. “Moreover, there are ports in Colombo and Trincomalee. The telecommunication system is in place. There are 140 flights between India and Sri Lanka every week,’’ Amunugama said.
He added the Tata Group would be invited next week.
The Tatas, too, will not feel out of home in Sri Lanka. The group has had a presence here for about 25 years.
