Indian foreign minister Salman Khurshid’s upcoming visit to Beijing next week will be marked by detailed exchanges on bilateral issues and on matters of common interest with Chinese leaders, China said on Friday, adding that the visit would strengthen strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Khurshid’s two-day visit will begin on May 9. During his visit, Khurshid will meet foreign minister, Wang Yi, among other leaders, foreign ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying told the regular briefing on Friday.
Khurshid’s visit is likely to calm frayed nerves as India and China grapple with the latest border dispute which has seen People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel reportedly putting up tents well-inside Indian territory.
The Chinese have consistently denied that its military personnel have violated the Line of Actual Control (LAC); it has responded to the grave and forceful Indian allegation with tactful lines like “maintaining peace at the border” and “communication channels between both countries were open”.
“While actively developing friendly cooperation, China and India are also committed to resolving disputes including the boundary ones through peaceful negotiations and try to ensure that this kind of disputes will not affect the development of the bilateral relations,” Hua said while answering a question on the Indian foreign minister’s visit.
“The two sides are in communication though the working mechanism for consultation and coordination on boundary affairs and border meetings for a solution to the incident in part of the China-India border. China stands ready to work with India to maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas between China and India,” she said,
She stressed on the importance of Khurshid’s visit.
“Foreign minister Khurshid’s visit to China represents one of the major high level interactions between China and India this year. During his visit Chinese leaders will meet with him. Wang Yi will hold talks with him. The two sides have in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations as well as issues of common interests,” Hua said.
She did not specify which other Chinese leaders Khurshid would meet but implied other meetings were lined up.
“In recent years China, India relations has scored considerable progress with ever deepening political mutual trust, fruitful achievements in practical cooperation as well as sound coordination and cooperation in international and regional issues,” Hua said.
She added: “We would like to make joint efforts with India to boost China India strategic cooperative partnership through this visit.”
