Four Sri Lanka navy personnel were killed and more than 20 injured in an air attack launched by the LTTE on a naval base in the eastern town of Trincomalee on Tuesday night, the government confirmed on Wednesday.

The LTTE had managed to damage the naval base.

C Perera of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies said the raid appeared to be an attempt on LTTE’s part to boost the sagging morale of its cadres, who have been rapidly losing ground to the armed forces.
On Wednesday, 27 Tamil rebels and two soldiers were killed in the north, the defence ministry said.
