A joke posted on Facebook by a passenger of the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 turned tragic after the airliner crashed on the border of Ukraine and Russia on Thursday.

Cor Pan, reportedly travelling on the flight from Amsterdam to Kaula Lampur, posted a picture of the jet on the social networking website, allegedly before boarding, with the message 'Mocht hij verdwijnen , zo ziet hij d'r uit'. Translated from Dutch to English, the caption reads 'In case it goes missing, here is what it looks like'.

In an apparent reference to the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 that vanished over the Indian Ocean about four months ago, Holland-based Pan posted the picture and caption before boarding the flight from Amsterdam airport on Thursday morning.

The post, which is yet to be verified, has been shared over 11,000 times on last count on the social networking website, and many of the users have since been posting condolence messages.

The post also surfaced on Reddit.

According to his profile on Facebook, Pan is self-employed and hails from Volendam in North Holland. He is likely to be one of the 298 passengers on board the downed flight.

The Malaysia Airlines MH17 Boeing 777 was shot down on Thursday over Ukraine, near the Russian border.

No passengers were reported to have survived when this story was filed.
