A moderate 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Papua province on Thursday but there were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued, seismologists said.

The quake struck at 10:34 am (0134 GMT), 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of Tanahmerah at a depth of 40 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia's geophysics agency put the magnitude of the quake at 5.8.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
