The Miss Universe contestant from the Philippines is this year’s winner but for one brief moment on Sunday evening, it appeared as if it might be a repeat win for Colombia.

Colombia contestant Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo was already wearing the crown as this year’s Miss Universe winner when host Steve Harvey returned to apologise.

Harvey says it was his mistake and that he would take responsibility for not reading the card correctly that named contestant Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach this year’s winner and Colombia the first runner-up.

Here is how the horrible mistake happened moment by moment.

This is Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the Miss Universe contestant from Philippines.

This is Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, the Miss Universe contestant from Columbia.

And here is Miss Universe host comedian (read villain) Steve Harvey.

Here is Gutierrez and Wurtzbach excited as they make the final two at the Miss Universe pageant.

They are waiting for the final announcement of Miss Universe 2015.

And the crown goes to...

Miss Columbia... Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo!!!

Let the celebrations begin...

First up hugs and flowers... Then crowned as Miss Universe

Miss Universe 2015 ....

.

Folks. Folks. I have to apologise. The winner is Miss Philippines...

What?!

Did he just say Miss Philippines?!

How awkward!

Crown removed...

Sash removed...

Flowers taken away...

You are the real Miss Universe 2015...

Let the celebrations begin...

And the crying begins too...

And the cause of all misery.... host misreading this card...

Harvey, who was hosting the contest for the first time, said he re-read the card and noticed it said “first runner-up” next to the Colombia contestant’s name before he asked producers if he had made a mistake.

An executive with pageant owner WME-IMG, Mark Shapiro, said Harvey caught the mistake and corrected it on his own, saying he wanted to make a wrong into a right.

“It was humiliating for the women. It was humiliating for him,” he told reporters after the pageant.
