Protesters shut down a central Nepal district and life was disrupted in parts of the capital over the killing of a Nepali Congress' youth wing leader in a prison brawl.
Shiva Poudel, the NC-affiliated youth organisation Tarun Dal's Chitawan district chairman, died last night after struggling for life for two weeks.
Poudel had been in custody for his alleged involvement in the murder of Sanjay Lama, a member of CPN-UML's youth wing, the Youth Association Nepal, and was critically injured in a Chitawan jail brawl two weeks ago.
He died in a Kathmandu hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, sparking protests in different parts of the country.
Nepali Congress and its sister organisations Tarun Dal and Nepal Students Union organised protest rallies in the capital and in the central Chitawan district in protest of the killing today. They shut down the Chitawan district in protest.
On December 6, five inmates including Poudel were injured in the attack at the jail.
Last week, he was brought to Kathmandu from Chitawan for further treatment after his health condition deteriorated.
NC has blamed lapse of security in the jail for the killing and asked the government to form a probe commission to investigate the incident. The party warned it will launch major protests if the culprit in the attack was not arrested.
In Chitawan, angry cadre of the party hit the streets, burning tyres on the road and bringing transport services to a halt. They demanded a probe into the incident, due compensation to the kin of the deceased and action against the guilty.
