US Defence Secretary Robert Gates voiced confidence on Monday that the new British government was committed to the war in Afghanistan and said the United States would not ask its closest ally to make any additional troop commitments.

"Based on the preliminary conversations that I've had with (British Defence Secretary Liam) Fox, I have the sense that the new British government is quite resolute with respect to Afghanistan, and reaffirming the commitment there," Gates told reporters travelling with him on his plane en route to Britain.

"I think that with 9,500 soldiers in Afghanistan that the United Kingdom has done everything anybody could expect of it. So no, I will not be making any further requests of the UK," Gates added before talks in London with the new British prime minister, defence minister and foreign secretary.
