Nine people were killed when a fire broke out in a coal mine in China's northwestern Shaanxi province, Xinhua reported on Friday.

Twenty-seven miners were working underground when the fire occurred around 7.00 p.m. Thursday in Quanzigou Coal Mine in Longmen township, the provincial government said.

One injured person was admitted to hospital, while 17 miners were lifted safely to the ground, an official said.
