'NKorea's Kim had surgery after stroke'

world Updated: Sep 11, 2008 10:45 IST

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il underwent brain surgery after suffering a stroke but is recovering, South Korea's defence minister told parliament on Thursday, according to a lawmaker.

Minister Lee Sang-Hee said no unusual troop movements have been detected in the communist state and South Korea's military is maintaining its customary alert level.

He was quoted by lawmaker Yoo Seong-Min, who attended the closed-door briefing.

Officials said earlier that Kim, 66, was thought to have undergone surgery after the stroke.
