It’s a cruel reality for millions, but subject of an entertainment reality show for some — layoffs have found their way to the idiot box through a show where employees of real companies hit by economic crisis would vote each other out of job.
Famous for reality shows like Big Brother, production house Endemol is producing a new show titled Somebody’s Gotta Go. The show would showcase every week a new struggling company, which needs to cut jobs to remain afloat, and it would be its employees deciding on who gets the boot. Endemol is said to have sold the distribution rights in the US to Fox and is hopeful of finding TV channels soon for broadcast in other countries.
Experts say the show may find its way to India, where a local version of Endemol’s Big Brother show, titled Big Boss, has completed two successful seasons.
However, the format of the show could get altered, as regulations in the country, where actual layoffs are also generally a hush-hush affair, might not allow a totally real- life format on such an issue.
As per the format of the new show, the company featured in it would open its balance sheet before its workers and thereafter they would decide whose salary should be cut or raised and who should be fired.
Each week the show would feature a new recession-hit company, which needs to make layoffs and implement other cost cutting measures.
To keep afloat, the company would open its books to its employees and reveal how much all of them get paid to decide on who they want to remain in and who should be out of the company.
