NY on alert over Awlaki's killing

world Updated: Oct 02, 2011 00:53 IST

The New York Police has said it is on "alert" after the killing of al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki in a US drone strike, amid possibility of attacks to avenge his death.

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a statement that al-Awlaki had followers in the US, including in New York City.

"... And for that reason we remain alert to the possibility that someone might want to avenge his death," Kelly said.

There were reports that al-Awlaki's lieutenant, Samir Khan, was also killed in the same strike.
