Oman cyclone toll rises to 25

world Updated: Jun 08, 2007 12:59 IST

At least 25 people have been confirmed dead in Oman due to the tropical cyclone Gonu, Oman news agency reported.

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) provided the latest update of the death roll in the cyclone on Thursday evening, the report said.

According to ROP, 25 people of different nationalities were found dead at various places in the country while 26 were still missing.

Gonu, the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the region since 1977, reached the coastal areas of Oman early on Wednesday, forcing evacuation of thousands of people and suspension for three days of Oman's oil and gas exports.
