Oprah to campaign for Obama

world Updated: Nov 27, 2007 22:35 IST

Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has received a boost over rival candidate Hillary Clinton with star TV personality Oprah Winfrey planning to campaign for the Illinois Senator ahead of the critical Iowa caucus on January 3.

Winfrey's appearance has been significant on at least two counts -- the talk show host had never endorsed a presidential candidate and Oprah is one of the most powerful voices in public life as well as host of the top-ranked television talk show for more than two decades.

On the surface the Clinton campaign has welcomed the idea that Winfrey will be in the Presidential political process.

"Everyone has wonderful supporters. We are proud of ours, but at the end of the day voters will determine which candidate has the strength and experience to make change happen on Day One," Phil Sanger the Spokesman of Senator Clinton said.

Senator Clinton's own campaign will be pulling out its own star in Iowa when the former President Bill Clinton -- dubbed as the great communicator -- will be campaigning for his wife in Iowa, the state which has the first primary and will in many ways set the trend for the top Democrats aspiring for the party nod.

The quiet setback to the Clinton campaign by way of Oprah Winfrey batting for Senator Obama is only the second shock of sorts to the New York Senator.

Senator Clinton who is the front runner among the Democratic candidates is trailing the five top Republican contenders according to a latest poll. This further fuels the nagging feeling that Senator Clinton is a "beatable" Democrat in the Nov 2008 showdown.

The survey also showed Clinton not performing as well as Obama among independents and younger voters.
